Praslin Parrot

German: Seychellen-Vasapapagei

Description: as sibilans, but outer webs of primaries with greyish-blue tinge; faint pale brownish patches to crown; bill brownish-grey; smaller than nominate form.

Length: 30 cm (12 ins), wing length 175 - 205 mm (7 - 8 ins)

Distribution: Praslin, one of Seychelles islands.

Habitat: woodland areas; mangrove swamps; savannah with trees, cultivated areas and plantations.

Status: nigra, libs and sibilans common; barklyi extremely endangered; population 60 t0 70 birds; loss of habitat, lack of nest sites, hunting in the past and nest hole competition are cited as reasons for being endangered.

Habits: in small groups outside breeding season; mostly seen flying or in the bare branches of treetops; noisy; also active on moonlit nights; not shy; if disturbed they often climb onto higher branches or hide in foliage rather than fly away; flight graceful; strong, rhythmic wing-beats are interspersed with gliding phases; call whistling and melodic.

Natural diet: various seeds, berries, fruits (particularly mango, guava and fig) and flowers to be found in trees; occasional raids on cocoa and banana plantations causing damage.

Breeding behaviour: breeding period from December to February; nests in dead trees or stumps of palms; occasionally up to 3.6 m (12 ft) deep; birds climb backwards down to nest floor; clutch 2 to 3 eggs; incubation 18 days; fledging period 35 days; egg measures 35.8 x 26.4 mm (1.41 x 1.04 ins).

Aviculture: lively, noisy parrot; requires space to fly; can be kept in colony system even in breeding season; occasionally shy; hardy when acclimatised; likes to go down to ground.

Accommodation: outside flight at least 5 x 1 x 2 m (15 x 3 x 6 ft) with adjoining shelter; minimum temperature 5°cC (41°cF); provide nest box; 4 sq. m (45 sq. ft) floor space per pair in communal aviary.

Diet: plenty of fruit (especially banana, apple, mango, peach, berries), and vegetables; seed mix of safflower, oats, buckwheat, canary seed and rowan berries; sunflower (also sprouted), softened pigeon food; regular supply of branches with fresh flowers and buds; half-ripe maize; mineral and vitamin supplements.

Breeding in aviculture: occasionally achieved; clutch 2 to 4 eggs; incubation 14 to 18 days; fledging period 35 to 42 days; breeding also possible in communal aviary, but not recommended; breeding condition signalled by lighter bill and skin to periophthalmic ring; female does not lose head feathers as Greater Vasa Parrot (Coracopsis vasa); vent is inverted by 4 to 5 cm (1.5 to 2 ins) before and during copulation; nest box 30 x 30 x 120 cm (12 x 12 x 48 ins); bill of male becomes dark again after young hatch, of female when young leave nest.
